International Cooperation

A new educational complex was created in 2008 in Kaliningrad which united the Baltic Fishing Fleet State Academy ('BFFSA' or just simply 'BGA' – derived from our Russian name Baltijskaya Gosudarstvenaya Akademia) and the Kaliningrad Marine College (KMC) to provide for their students a wide variety of opportunities for becoming highly skilled experts of the highest professional level. Our two institutes are the oldest ones in Kaliningrad region for higher education. For a long time we focused not only on local, but also on other Russian regions' and of foreign countries' needs. We supply computer rooms with Internet connection, numerous laboratories and training facilities using the newest technologies, a great sports complex, well equipped libraries, and last but not least, teachers and experts of the highest class, many of which have great practical experience in their field.

The educational complex BGA-KMC includes the Russian Institute of Sea Experts’ Professional Skill Improvement (Institute for Higher Education of Executives and Experts of Fish Processing Facilities). This Institute is engaged in additional vocational training and refresher training of experts of the fishing and river fleets according to the requirements of chapters V and VI of the International Convention STCW-78 with amendments and the ISPS Code.

Further the Academy provides an International Logistical Centre, the Centre of Engineering Pedagogics and the Centre of Automobile Electronics. An extraordinary important role in training of professional seafarers plays the Certified Nautical Training Center of the Kaliningrad Marine College, where all ship's navigational instruments can be simulated electronically. This centre enables students to in-depth studies and practical application of a vessel's technical equipment, raising the professional qualification of seamen and officers. It is licensed for radar-tracking preparation, GMDSS, electronic cartography and all bridge equipment as well as for survival training for professional seamen, incl. visualization and simulator preparation.

Foreign Students

Since 1974 the Baltic Fishing Fleet State Academy also trains experts for other countries, in the Kaliningrad Marine College since the beginning of 1990s. Lately a lot of foreign students received higher education in our Academy and College. They come from all around the world – Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. Both in the Academy and in the College we were able to gain significant experience in working with foreign trainees, graduate and post-graduate students. Our graduates successfully work on board vessels of many countries' fishing fleets, world-wide in the fishing and transport industries, as specialists for communication and safety, and facility managers.

Higher Qualification of Seafarers – BGA Certified Nautical Training Centre

Also based at our Academy is the best training center in Russia on performance according to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW-78/95). Here we conduct qualification improvement training for officers of fishing, commercial and river fleets. Answering to regional demand, BGA recently successfully established two training centres for specialists for automobile factories, each one equipped with the most modern facilities.

One important step on the way of further integrating BGA into the world community of educational institutions for nautical personnel and worldwide recognition of its diplomas was the accreditation of our Academy's nautical training by IMarEST (Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology). The BGA also is a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities.

Responding to market requests, the college has developed and introduced a Quality Management System, based on the requirements of the international standard ISO 9001:2000 as well as on the International Convention STCW 78/95. Since January 2004 we twice successfully passed the Certificate DNV 1801 2004 AQ HEL-FINAS (Det Norske Veritas) for our educational activities. We are proud of these certificates confirming that our education corresponds not only to Russian but also to the highest International Standards.

Beyond our aforementioned activities the Academy also provides an International Logistical Centre, the Centre of Engineering Pedagogics and the Centre of Automobile Electronics. Sail Training Vessel 'Kruzenshtern'

The pride of our institution is our sail training ship, the four-masted barque 'Kruzenshtern' - one of the world's greatest sailing vessels. She rightfully is called the "business card" of the Russian sail-training fleet. Our barque is the last vessel of the great Flying P-fleet still sailing, and one of only two still active former cargo sailing vessels, continuing a tradition of more than 5000 years. The ship is equipped with the most modern navigating equipment and comfortable crew quarters. On board 'Kruzenshtern' cadets of our Academy and College as well as other nautical educational institutions of Russia gain their sea-legs and learn first skills under the direction of qualified tutors. Also they pass their examinations for their first nautical certificates on board. During the training voyages the barque visits ports all around the world. In 1995/96 and 2005/2006 she circumnavigated the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. Our vessel further is a constant participant of the international tall ship regattas. Being a very fast vessel, especially in strong winds, 'Kruzenshtern' usually occupies one of the top places in her class. For example, during the 'Year 2000-Millennium Regatta' our barque won 46 prizes and the 'World Cup'.
