Head of Rosrybolovstvo joined the expedition

On February 27, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Russia - the Head of Rosrybolovstvo Ilya Shestakov came to the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo, to join the transatlantic crossing of the STS Kruzenshtern and support the expedition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica and the 75th anniversary of the Victory over fascism.

The Head of Rosrybolovstvo, accompanied by the Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, Nikolai Sofinskiy, visited the monument to Captain Bellingshausen in Montevideo and took part in the wreath-laying ceremony.

Bellingshausen and Lazarev's expedition did not reach the Uruguayan coast on the way to Antarctica, but the city authorities supported the idea to raise a monument in honour of the famous Russian Navigator in Uruguay.

The ceremony was also attended by the Director of the Department of culture of the municipality of Montevideo Federico Penino, Head of the Montevideo Municipality "E" Augustin Lescano, Kruzenshtern's Captain Mikhail Eremchenko, crew members and cadets. The national Anthem of the Russian Federation was performed at the ceremony.

Ilya Shestakov thanked the Uruguayan colleagues, noted the significance of the moment, importance of preserving the traditions of Russian seafarers and the memory of the great discoveries.
