Passions of the sea

Art historian Pavel Matviyets made a lecture on board about  one of the most famous Russian seascape painters, Ivan Aivazovsky.
At the "Passions of the sea" lecture, cadets and crew members learned a lot about seascape painting, its origin and traditions. Pavel Matviyets told about this genre and its development in Russia, the most prominent artists who worked in seascape, marine and maritime paintings.

Ivan Aivazovsky is considered one of the greatest masters of marine art in Russia. An important theme in his work is the confrontation between man and the elements. A storm was considered by Aivazovsky as a state of mind that had to be experienced and rethought. That's why it was so important for the artist to depict in any picture at least a single ray of light which would necessarily symbolize hope for the future.

Aivazovsky had a phenomenal memory and could talk for hours about the structure of water and the physics of the ship.
